Korean Television Drama: Full House
Starring: Song Hye Gyo, Jung Ji Hoon, Han Eun Jung, and Kim Sung Soo
Synopsis
Poor Han Ji Eun (Song Hye Gyo). After coming back from a trip to China, Han Ji Eun discovers that her house has just been sold (without her knowledge) to famous actor Lee Young Jae (Jung Ji Hoon). Now homeless, she strikes a deal with Lee Young Jae: in order for her to stay at the house, she agrees to serve as his personal maid for the duration of the time.
Circumstances led them to strike another deal, one that involves a contract marriage. If Han Ji Eun accepts to marry Lee Young Jae under false pretense for 6 months, he will return the house to her as alimony. They must appear like a happy couple in the face of the public, but in reality they despise one another. Under the terms of the contract, she still have to continue with all the housework which is quite unbearable if you are serving under Lee Young Jae. He's mean, overbearing, rude, spoiled, and selfish. And for some odd reason, Han ji Eun starts falling in love with him. I can't fathom the reason why.
Throw in Yoo Min Hyuk (Kim Sung Soo) and Kang Hae Won (Jung Ji Hoon) into the mix and things start to get even more complicated. Like all Korean dramas there's always a love triangle. In this case, it's more like a love square. Ha Ji Eun is in love with Lee Young Jae, but he's in love with Kang Hae Won, who is in love with Yoo Min Hyuk, who is only interested in Han Ji Eun. Like I said before: a love square.
Casting
Song Hye-gyo as Han Jee-eunJee-eun is a cheerful, spirited and lively realist, who under no circumstances seems to be upset, but who is also very stubborn. She looks very sprightly on the surface, but deep inside she is easily hurt and introverted. She pretends to be smart and upbeat but in reality she is dull-witted and naïve. She becomes easily attached to things and people she likes, and at the most decisive moments she tends to become soft-hearted. While naïve and unsophisticated, she always speaks out when she considers something to be wrong, because she thinks that hiding things in your heart is foolish. Jee-eun is an Internet love story writer, whose nickname is “money-maker.” She also has a part-time job as she needs more money to maintain the Full House. She is a cute personage who firmly believes that money is the only thing lonely people, like she, can trust.
(Btw, I really think that she's pretty- the sweet and bubbly kind. Oh and she lost (a lot of) weight!)
Jung Ji-hoon(Rain) as Lee Young-jaeYoung-jae is one of the best Asian stars. He does his utmost not to hurt other people and not to be hurt himself. Every movie he starred in became a blockbuster. He is stubborn when it comes to selecting which movies to star in, but he has received much acclaim for his talent. Although Young-jae always behaves and speaks as he wants, he does that only to protect himself from being hurt and to be careful not to hurt others. People think of him as a very candid person, but that is also Young-jae’s strategy to hide himself – or rather his failure to express himself to the fullest. As the one who is unaccustomed to being frank and open, Young-jae is bad at making friends and very proud of his ideals and principles.
Han Eun-jeong as Kang Hye-wonHye-won is the daughter of Doctor Lee's friend. She is a fashion designer, who designs Young-jae’s clothes. She has known Young-jae’s family since her childhood. Her entire life Hye-won has lived in abundance and had many choices. She looks like a fairy-tale princess: long, straight hair, mysterious smile, slim body plus good manners and a charming personality. She comes from a rich family, and is accustomed to being loved. She has never been rejected by anybody, and only feels content when everybody around her loves her. This self-respectful girl is also smart and realistic. She knows the harsh reality of life and is very prudent. She believes that happiness is an objective thing that can be achieved through negotiating.
Kim Seong-soo as Yoo Min-hyukMin-hyuk is a director of a large media company. He dreams of establishing Asia’s Walt Disney or Fox. This tenacious and smart guy is also respected and recognized for his skills. He is confident in earning trust from people. He has always been a winner, and is determined to remain one for the rest of his life. This good-looking guy possesses sophisticated manners and is very eloquent – a prince charming that any girl could ever dream of. Min-hyuk believes that life is too short to live it without fun. Although he looks to be light-minded, he is very affectionate inside. Unlike his seemingly unrestricted personality, he is very composed and prudent. He can’t stand losing and has a strong desire to win in everything, which probably explains his successful career.
Reviewer's(Debbie's) Thoughts after the drama
I spent 16 hours watching this drama serial. Call me crazy. This is actually the first light-hearted Korean drama I've ever watched.
Of course, like all K-dramas, "Full House" has its touching moments too. Like when Ji Eun realizes that Young Jae skipped an important date with her just to cheer Hye Won up, and also when Ji Eun finally confesses her love for Young Jae and you see Young Jae hesitating to express his too, but in a fit of confusion (he still loves Hye Won), he apologizes and tells her he cannot be with her anymore.
If there was one thing I would remember "Full House" over, it would be the chemistry of Bi and Song Hae Gyo. I remember sharing with other Krystalhearters and Soompians that I felt the two most important things to a good drama were:
a) A good storyline
b) Chemistry between the leads
"Full House" had both, and where it outshone other dramas (apart from "Stairway To Heaven", another drama with great chemistry between the leads) was the amount of affection between Bi and Song Hae Gyo.
Their childishness would remind the most of us of how we acted as adolescents and yet their love would also remind us that you never know who could be the one destined to spend the rest of his/her life with you.
I rate "Full House" a 5 out of 5 stars and recommend all Korean drama fans to watch this drama. This is especially so if you've had enough of tearjerkers and like a good, clean break from the norm of K dramas, yet with some mellowness within to soothe your heart.
Haha think you guys can figure that I'm some k-drama addict. My eyes are kinda tired and sore. Think I need to rest soon. But I didn't regret staying up the whole day/night watching "full house". What's next? I'm gonna try completing "Jewel in the palace or Daejanggeum" Another hit k-drama series that I have to complete. Okay, think pple are gonna start teasing me when I'm not a mother of two. haha Knowing that it's such an auntie's or housewife's past-time, sobbing over korean dramas. haha But as what I've said before, I'm a "Frank Sinatra" person, a writing of poems kinda girl.
Sneaks on Daejanggeum
Jang-geum (played by Lee Young-ae) is the daughter of Seo Cheon-su (played by Park Chan-hwan), a former judicial officer-turned butcher (the lowest social class) who lives in hiding after being expelled from the royal palace, and Madame Park (played by Kim Hye-seon), a former court lady working in the royal kitchen who narrowly escaped death following a murderous conspiracy planned by Court Lady Choi. As a young child, Jang-geum loses both parents and enters the royal palace in the kitchen. In the royal kitchen, she spends a harsh childhood in continuous competition with Choi Geum-yeong (played by Hong Li-na). Under the protection and tutelage of Court Lady Han, Jang-geum makes every effort to become the best cook in the palace. Her endeavors enable her to become a recognized cook; but Lady Choi and her faction, jealous of the success of Lady Han and Jang-geum, plot a conspiracy, which leads to the death of Lady Han and Jang-geum’s expulsion from the royal palace. Jang-geum is relegated to the position of maidservant for the local government office on Jeju-do Island. While in exile, Jang-geum learns medicine. Through native intelligence and patient efforts, she earns her reputation as a woman doctor on the island. After a time, she returns to the palace, where she is recognized by the king and becomes the royal physician and also the first female physician in history to serve the king. The king falls in love with her, but she cannot return his love, as she is already in love with Min Jung-Ho, who has stood by her side during the most difficult times. * The concluding part omitted.
